Galle Part II

When you go the furtherest tip of Sri Lanka you invariably hear of the Galle Fort and the beauty that surrounds it. During our stay at Galle , we did earmark a day towards City sightseeing. Tuk Tuks or private vehicles are easily available and are recommended since the Galle cty can get crowded, noisy and under the unforgiving Asian sun its a ride you want to ride over quickly. The Galle fort has a majestic feel to it. The Indian ocean view is breathtaking. The tiny lanes through the older structures are ridden with an old world charm thats integral to the look and feel of Sri Lankas history books. Kids can enjoy the horse ride around the gardens of the fort with small carts of ice cream vendors to deal with the glare of the sun. There are small pathways from the fort area to the beach below. However we chose to head out to hunt for a reasonably fared restaurant since it was nearing Lunch time and was not the ideal time to do a tourist sight seeing trip.
The galle cricket staduim at the entrance of the Fort has a club restuarant where we enjoyed a simple dressed down version of a sri lankan non vegetarian meal. One gets to enjoy a meal with the backdrop of a local team playing at the staduim if cricket is your source of entertainment. Overall, there are plenty of local eateries on offer in the city area but its just a matter of picking a place that allows you to enjoy your meal under the prevailing weather conditions with the family.
The kids were eager to return to Unawatuna beach after a lunch siesta so that became our tuk tuk destination. There were plenty of tourists at the beach so we moved to a quieter spot with the tables laid out on the sand. Christmas lights were still out and the mood was still festive. We ordered the usual fish and chips that the kids have grown to love and a calamari fry that was simply outstanding. Highly recommend the fish and seafood at the shacks on the beach here since they are so fresh and they go through some experienced local hands before they reach the tables.
The tourists renting out at the Unawatuna beach rooms were mostly the backpackers on a limited budget so the rooms were pretty basic as is with most beach facing accommodation but for couples and people on a shoestring budget its a wonderful hassle free option. No frills, low expectations and a view to die for.
